Ingredients

For the Danish
  • 1 package Puff Pastry Use all-butter variety for the best flavor.
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese Can use low-fat version if preferred.
  • 1/4 cup Sugar Can substitute with honey or maple syrup.
  • 2 cups Fresh Strawberries Ensure they’re ripe; can substitute with other berries.
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract Use pure vanilla extract for best flavor.
  • 1 large Egg For egg wash; can omit if avoiding eggs.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Cut it into squares, about 4x4 inches.
  3. In a bowl, combine softened cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth and creamy.
  4. Place a tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture in the center of each pastry square. Top with sliced strawberries.
  5. Gently fold two opposite corners of the pastry squares toward the center over the filling, leaving the other two corners open.
  6. Beat the egg and brush it over the folded pastries.
  7. Arrange the danishes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

For best results, keep the pastry cold while working; excess filling can overflow, so don’t overfill pastries. Experiment with flavors by adding lemon zest or cardamom.
