Ingredients

  • 8 slices Sturdy Sandwich Bread e.g., sourdough, brioche, Texas toast, or country white bread
  • 4 tbsp Unsalted Butter softened
  • 8 slices Cheese Slices about 8 oz total; sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gruyere, or a blend
  • 1/4 tsp Garlic Powder optional, for extra flavor

Equipment

  • Large Baking Sheet (approx. 13x18 inches)
  • Parchment paper
  • Small mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • Butter Knife

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup and non-stick cooking.
  2. In a small bowl, combine the softened butter with the garlic powder (if using). This adds an extra layer of flavor to your grilled cheese.
  3. Generously spread the butter mixture evenly on one side of each slice of bread. Ensure good coverage for maximum crispiness.
  4. Place 4 slices of bread, butter-side down, on the prepared sheet pan, leaving some space between them. Layer two slices of your chosen cheese on each piece of bread currently on the pan. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread, butter-side up.
  5. Bake for 9-10 minutes, or until the bottom side of the sandwiches is golden brown and starts to crisp up. Keep an eye on them to prevent burning.
  6. Carefully flip each sandwich using a sturdy spatula. Return the sheet pan to the oven and bake for another 8-9 minutes, or until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is thoroughly melted, bubbly, and oozing slightly.
  7. Remove the Sheet Pan Oven Grilled Cheese Sandwiches from the oven. Let them rest on the sheet pan for a minute or two before transferring to plates. This allows the cheese to set slightly and prevents tearing. Serve immediately with your favorite soup or dipping sauce.

Notes

For the best grilled cheese, use a good quality, sturdy bread that can hold up to the cheese and butter. Experiment with different cheese combinations, like a sharp cheddar with a creamy Monterey Jack, or a smoky Gouda. For extra richness, you can spread a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the bread instead of butter, or in combination with it. This also helps achieve an incredibly golden crust.
