Ingredients

For the Marinade
  • 1 cup Soy sauce Use low sodium to control saltiness.
  • 1/2 cup Honey Maple syrup can be a substitute.
  • 1/4 cup Hoisin sauce Essential for classic BBQ taste.
  • 1/4 cup Rice vinegar Avoid substitutes if possible.
  • 4 cloves Garlic Minced for best flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Ginger Grated, fresh or ground ginger works.
  • 1 teaspoon Five-spice powder Can be omitted if not available.
  • 1 teaspoon Sesame oil Add at the end for flavor.
For the Ribs
  • 2 pounds Pork ribs Baby back or spare ribs.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, mix the soy sauce, honey, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, and five-spice powder. Coat the ribs in this mixture, cover, and let them marinate for at least 1 hour—overnight is even better!
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
  2. Place the marinated ribs on a baking sheet lined with aluminum foil for easy cleanup. Pour any leftover marinade over the top for extra flavor.
  3. Cover the ribs loosely with another sheet of foil to keep them moist, and pop them into the oven. Bake for about 2.5 to 3 hours, or until they’re fall-off-the-bone tender.
Glazing
  1. Once the ribs are tender, remove the foil and brush a generous layer of the marinade over them. Switch to the broiler and cook for another 5-10 minutes until the glaze is bubbly and caramelized.
  2. Remove from the oven and let them rest for a few minutes before cutting into individual pieces.
Serving
  1. Serve alongside white rice or jasmine rice, with a side of stir-fried vegetables or coleslaw.

Notes

For best results, marinate ribs overnight. Watch closely when broiling to avoid burning. Can substitute meat type based on preference.
